Job Description: Shop Employee

  1. Introduction
    This standard procedure establishes and describes the duties, authority, and responsibilities of the Shop Employee of Merchandise Recyclers & Liquidators.
  2. Requirements
    1. Education
      Desired: High School Diploma or equivalent
    2. Experience
      1. Required: none
      2. Preferred: Knowledge of Jobs done in one of MRL’s shops.
    3. Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
      1. Ability to read and write.
      2. Ability to work with inventories and price lists.
      3. Ability to do basic mathematical functions: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, and Percent.
      4. Ability to read a tape measure.
      5. Ability to run and maintain safety check on equipment in each shop.
    4. Physical
      1. Body positions: Sitting, standing, walking and lifting
      2. Body movements: Walking, stepping over obstacles, bending, and stooping
      3. Lifting: Must be able to safely lift 125 lbs.
      4. Body senses: Must hear well enough to converse on a telephone, must see well enough to read reports, prints, etc.
    5. Language
      Must read and write English at High School level.
  3. Working Conditions
    1. Shops are inside and out of the weather.
    2. Some limited outside jobs could occur.
    3. Other challenges as they occur in the normal day-to-day operations of the company.
  4. Authority
    1. To make decisions that pertain to their assigned areas regarding assigned duties.
    2. To maintain all safety requirements required by law and by company.
  5. Reporting Relationships
    Shop Employee reports directly to the Store Manager they are assigned to.
  6. Responsibilities
    The principal responsibilities of the Shop Employee consist of, but are not limited to, the following:
    1. Cutting counter tops and pre-hanging doors
    2. Repairing cabinets and doors
    3. Building pre-manufactured furniture
    4. Routine maintenance of shop area
    5. Maintain a safe, clean and organized work area
    6. Assist customers as needed
    7. Maintain grounds, equipment and the shop area
    8. Building carpentry
  7. Principal Duties
    The principal duties of the Shop Employee shall consist of, but not be limited to, the following:
    1. Cutting counter tops
      1. Tops are to be cut in a first-come / first-served order.
      2. All counter tops to be cut must have a completed order form signed by the customer
      3. Job consists of using multiple saws to make:
        1. Straight cuts
        2. Miter cuts
        3. Sink cuts
        4. End caps
        5. End splashes
        6. Linear cuts
      4. Shop employees must create and maintain a schedule as to how long it will take to get a counter top ready to go. Allow enough time to do a quality job along with keeping an acceptable production level. Below are approximate times for cutting tops - allowances may be needed for matching colors, radius, and striping for end caps.
        1 sink cut & 1 end splash approx. 45 min.
        1 sink cut & 2 end caps approx. 45 min.
        1 sink cut, 1 end cap & 1 miter approx. 1 hour
        1 sink cut, 2 end caps & 2 miter   approx. 1 hour 45 min.
    2. Repairing cabinets - this will be whatever is required to make them saleable, including, but not limited to:
      1. Repairing scratches or dents
      2. Putting hinges on a door
      3. Re-gluing doors, drawers, face frames and uprights together
      4. Replacing uprights on damaged cabinets
    3. Pre-hanging doors
      1. Plowing jambs for headers and thresholds
      2. Cutting headers and thresholds to size
      3. Hinge mortising on doors and jambs
      4. Some kerfing on jambs for weather stripping
      5. Boring holes in doors and jambs for doorknobs and locks as required
        Pre-hanging doors   approx. 45 min.
        Boring holes approx. 20 min. per hole
    4. Repairing doors - Done during free time
      1. Cutting to size
      2. Repairing scratches, dents, holes, etc.
      3. Anything else a door would need to make it saleable
    5. Building pre-manufactured furniture - entertainment centers, computer desks, tables and chairs, chests of drawers, microwave carts, etc.
    6. Routine maintenance on shop equipment
      1. Saw blade guards on all saws
      2. Sharpening saw blades, new blades for the jigsaw, new bits for routers, etc.
      3. Keeping equipment cleaned off, emptying saw dust bins under the table-saw
      4. Keeping eye protection clean
      5. Oiling equipment that requires it
    7. Accounting for tools and equipment in shop area
      1. Tools should be signed in and out
      2. Take minor inventory on tools and equipment on a daily basis. (This takes about 5 minutes to check)
    8. Assist customers with locating the merchandise that they wish to purchase. Load purchases for the customers whenever possible in a professional manner.
    9. Building carpentry as needed.
  8. Measurement of Performance
    The Shop Employee measurement of performance will be considered by the following:
    1. Timeliness and accuracy of work performed.
    2. Shop areas are maintained in a neat, clean, and organized manner
    3. Good level of morale and spirit of teamwork and cooperation within department and with other employees.
    4. Other work assigned by the Operations Manager has been done in an accurate and timely fashion.
  9. Acknowledgement

I also understand that management may ask me at certain times to perform other duties or assign me other responsibilities than the ones written above.
